Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico and an important part of the Mexican DNA. Your local guide will welcome you at the airport and will transfer you to your hotel. On route, they will explain what is planned for the next few days activities.
Day 1. Downtown Oaxaca City Tour
On this first day, you will get to see the main sites of the city.
You will start by exploring Santo Domino Temple, and follow with Calle Macedonio Alcala, lively area known for its art galleries, museums, shops, crafts, cafes etc. After visiting Teatre Macedonio Alcal and Oaxaca Cathedral, you will then reach the heart of the city.
Later, the tour continues towards Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre markets. They are the most emblematic markets of the city, a perfect mix of tradition and trade. There, you will be able to sample typical Mexican produce and witness the process of chocolate grinding.
Day 2. Visit of Monte Albán + Visit Santa María El Tule
In the morning, you will make your way, 10 km away, to what used to be the largest Zapotec city: Monte Alban. Strategically located on a mountain, it will impress you with its large square and 3 main structures: the building of the Dancers, the South Platform, and the Great Ball Court. A special GRIT Freedom chair will be provided for those who need it.
After this visit, you will be going to Santa María del Tule, where you will have lunch. You will then continue your journey to the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca, via Teotitlan del Vallee, known for its crafts and more specifically its carpets, made of wool and dyed with natural products.
At the end of the day, you will arrive at Llano Grande and check in your cabins for the night.
Day 3. Epic Sierra Norte Sunrise + Trekking to Lachatao + Prehispanic Ritual “Temazcal”
You will start your day early, around 05:00 to start trekking towards Sierra Norte and witness one of the most beautiful dawns. With a bit of luck, and depending on the time and the weather, you will also be able to see the magical sea of clouds. Special adapted equipment will be provided. Alternatively, for those who would prefer not to trek this part of the trip, it is possible to shorten the walk by driving. In that case, the viewpoint will be a 15-minute walk away from where the vehicle will leave you. You will then have a typical breakfast in the village.
After breakfast, you will start walking towards Lachatao, on Ka-Yezzi Daa-Vii path. This trail crosses the territory with a 23km descent. Special adaptive equipment and assistance will be provided at all times.
You will then have lunch in Lachatao, before attending a traditional Temazcal. A prehispanic ritual dedicated to fire and life, a temazcal aims to cleanse your body, mind, and spirit. A truly memorable experience!
At the end of the day, you will make your way to your cabin, to check in and get some well-deserved rest. Dinner will then be served.
Day 4. Trekking to Latuvi + Sunset Benito Juarez
After a typical breakfast, you will start walking towards Latuvi via Camino Real. This route is part of a wider pre-Hispanic route that linked the Zapotec cities of the central valleys to the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, you will see some of the original stone used to build the way, in excellent condition. At some time during the journey, you will be walking at the edge of a river, and cross a canyon. From there, you will be able to observe the diverse flora of the Sierra Norte. Once arrived in Latuvi, you will have lunch.
You will then head to your next adventure: a short trek to the viewpoint of the town of Benito Juarez, accessible via an incredible suspension bridge.
At the end of the day, you will be transferred to Llano Grande where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 5. Zipline over Cuajilamoyas + Cooking lesson with a local family
After a typical breakfast, you will be transferred to Cuajimoloyas for your next activity: a 1km zipline. You will trek a small mountain for about 30 minutes to be able to access the zip line top.
Before returning to Oaxaca City, you will visit Mr. Eli’s Farm. You will learn to prepare a mole with their special family recipe and prepare tortillas. You will get to share, hear stories and discover the local’s life philosophy. You will be having lunch on site.
