Wheel the World develops projects on famous tourist destinations with one purpose: Enable people with disabilities, their friends and family to explore them. Every project consists of leaving a legacy: detecting touristic experiences, provide adaptive equipment and transform accommodations to make them more accessible. This is how Wheel the World is helping to transform touristic destinations more inclusive, not only for future visitors but also for the local community.
Why San Pedro de Atacama, Chile now?
San Pedro de Atacama, one of the most visited places in Chile, is the most amazing and driest desert in the world. Therefore, on May 2018 our team is heading there to change the actual reality of a noninclusive tourist destination for people with disabilities.
San Pedro de Atacama is located in the north of Chile in the Atacama Region. 12% of its population has some kind of disability. 156.000 tourists visit this place every year, to enjoy the amazing views of Salar de Atacama, Valle de la Luna, Lagunas Altiplánicas, and the famous Salar de Tara. Amazing hikes and bike rides can be done along this desert. All these experience are not possible today for people with disabilities.
This will be the first 100% inclusive expedition: People with a vision impairment, who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who have mental and physical disabilities will be part of this new project with one purpose: Enable an expedition to San Pedro de Atacama so it can be explored by all.
For this objective, we will redesign a hostel to make it accessible to all by restructuring common areas, rooms, and bathrooms.
Also, we will donate special wheelchairs and hand-bikes to enable the possible experiences.
We wish to thank you all for your incredible support in our previous campaigns and thank you for supporting us in this new challenge.
We seek to raise USD $20.000 and transform San Pedro de Atacama as a destination for all!
