There are 7.2 million Mexicans with disabilities, the big majority of them do not get to explore their wonderful land due to the lack of infrastructure and services for them, but also because society believes that handicap people are inactive and they are not looking for adventure, not true.

Do you want to want to leave a legacy in a pristine region? Be part of a documentary that will tell the story of how a group of adventurers created the first accessible travel experience in one of the largest virgin areas in the continent, Sierra Norte Oaxaca by Wheel the World.

SIERRA NORTE OAXACA

Join us on this unique journey and be part of one of the first accessible travel adventures ever done in Mexico! We will hike marvelous trails, enjoy unique real Mexican cuisine, learn about ancestral medicine and traditions while leaving a legacy for future travelers with disabilities.

Under 90 minutes from the City of Oaxaca exists one of the biggest virgin areas in the American Continent, Sierra Norte. This pristine region is one of the most biodiverse ones in the world and you can discover it through a vast trail network of more than 100 km.

This area of around 300 km has been inhabiting by a group of Zapotec villages for more than 400 years. In such a compacted zone you will find many different microclimates ranging from deep pine forest to semi-desertic scenarios which giant agaves bigger than you.

We will take a journey through some epic trails, ranging from 2,000 mts up to 3,200 mts high, to take the best shots for a final documentary where you will be part of a great story to change the way people travel around the world.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

  • Discover on foot one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, Oaxaca, a UNESCO World Heritage site that represents an important part of the Mexican DNA.  We will eat amazing food in one of the local markets and visit a small mezcal workshop on our way to Sierra Norte.
  • We will arrive at Llano Grande, one of the “Pueblos Mancomunados”, this will be our home for the next 5 days. You will feel immediately in peace in this quiet small town where you will rest in cozy cabins.
  • Every morning we will have a tasty traditional breakfast to get ourselves ready and energized for the day.  Likewise, dinner will also happen in our base town with a local family.
  • As we keep moving around Sierra Norte, lunch will happen in different towns every day.
  • Our exploration will consist of a combination of activities between hiking and biking, connecting with local people and their traditions and learning in small workshops about their ancient way of life.
  • We will hike daily trails between 10-15 km to trace our path between the different towns of “Pueblos Mancomunados”.

When?

  • From October 22 to October 26
  • We will meet in Oaxaca City in October 22. Welcoming dinner in a traditional local restaurant. (**We suggest booking flights arriving in Oaxaca City no later than 6pm).
  • In October 23 we will walk around Oaxaca City during the morning. After lunch we will start our way to Sierra Norte, but making a stop in a local mezcal workshop. We will arrive to Llano Grande before sunset.
  • From October 23 to October 26 we will stay in Sierra Norte.
  • October 26 shuttle back to Oaxaca City (**Flights should depart after 3 pm).

    • Insurance (it is mandatory you purchase appropriate insurance for this trip thinking about your personal needs). Assist Card.
    CONDITIONS:
    -11 spots available
    -This experience is subject to 5 minimum spots sold by September 30
    TIPS:
    -You can book your flight directly to Mexico City and from there take another flight to Oaxaca City. Aeromexico is a great option because of their offer, nevertheless, other airlines like Interjet or Volaris are good options. 
    -Wear comfortable clothing, best if it is waterproof. 
    -Hiking boots are hardly suggested.
    -A good jacket and a beanie as early morning and nights in Sierra Norte are cold.
