Visitors can enjoy walking through 2km (1.2 mi) of paved hiking trails in the lush La Garita de Alajuela national forest. The Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center is a wildlife rehabilitation center and sanctuary that rescues over 3,000 animals each year. Guests arrive at the Rescue center on a small 8-person wheelchair-accessible van with free-turning space and an electric lift. Among the 125 species of animals represented in the sanctuary are sloths, monkeys, colorful pecans, alligators, and tortoises. The center has experienced guides that share stories about the rescued animals and help guests identify wild flora and fauna. Many pathways are accessible to wheelchair users as they are step-free, clear of obstacles, and have gradual inclines. The traveler may remain in their wheelchair and stop for breaks as desired. The guide-dog-friendly Wildlife Center also has an accessible step-free bathroom with free-turning space and grabs bars. The center is an excellent choice for your next family adventure as it offers kid’s tours and hosts a children’s environmental education program. The two-hectare Mini-Farm was designed with the whole family in mind and has a whole host of domesticated animals, including miniature horses, sheep, parakeets, chickens, and guinea pigs. Guests may visit the convenient and step-free on-site restaurant that is also accessible to wheelchair users. The restaurant serves a variety of international cuisines and Costa Rican dishes. Those looking to explore local restaurants are also in luck as the seafood restaurant La Pesqueria de Limonata and the vegan El Chante Vegano are just a 15-minute drive away. Be sure to stop by the gift shop before leaving the Rescue center to purchase wildlife-related souvenirs and artwork. Wheel-chair accessible transportation back to the hotel is available and includes a 3 point seatbelt for people with reduced mobility.
