About Fiji

Fiji is the picture-perfect paradise you’ve been dreaming of - white sand beaches, warm blue waters, palm trees and rustic beach huts. In Fiji, you can discover the joy of ‘island time’, a relaxed pace of life where you slow down and stop to sniff the tropical flowers. If you’re in search of adventure, Fiji has that in spades: it’s a popular destination for diving, snorkeling, surfing, waterskiing and more. Heading inland, you can trek up into the mountains, stopping at waterfalls along the way. Everywhere you go, you will meet friendly locals who can share their culture with you, which draws influences from Pacific islands, India, China and England. You may be invited to take part in a kava ceremony where you sit in a circle and share a drink made from the crushed roots of the kava plant, served in a ‘bilo’. After a few drinks, you’ll feel your body unwind and your mind relax. Bula!

Accessible travel Fiji

Accommodations for people with disabilities are unfortunately relatively rare in Fiji, except in more modern hotels and resorts, most of which have some accessible rooms. When getting around, you may encounter broken sidewalks with high curbs, or rough unpaved roads. There are few accessible public toilets available. Island-hopping is possible on your trip to Fiji, but you may have to travel by plane as most journeys between islands are on small catamarans, which may not be accessible for wheelchair users.

In order to get the most out of your trip, planning ahead is essential. When you arrive, you will also find that Fijian people are very friendly and willing to lend a hand. They can also share their knowledge of the islands and give you tips on places that you will be able to visit.

No vaccinations are required to visit Fiji, but as with all international travel, it is recommended to be up-to-date on your vaccinations, including tetanus. Fiji has been classified as having a risk of Zika virus cases, so travelers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Healthcare facilities in Fiji are limited and doctors often expect immediate cash payment for treatment. Be sure to get appropriate health insurance to fit your personal and travel needs, and have funds available to cover any medical emergency.

Security

Fiji is generally a safe destination, but pickpocketing and petty theft can occur. It is recommended to be cautious and avoid flashing valuables. If possible, leave as many valuables as possible in hotel safes and, if traveling by car, always lock the vehicle and keep bags out of sight.

When walking in isolated areas or through cities at night, take particular care and avoid traveling alone. Always let someone know where you are.

Weather

Fiji has a warm, tropical climate that is relatively stable all year round, with average temperatures from 26°C-30°C. There is a wet season from November to April, when you can expect short, intense rain showers. The smaller islands tend to receive less rainfall than the main islands.

Cyclones occur in Fiji, with an average of 17 cyclones per decade, which can cause moderate to severe damage. It is advised to take reasonable precautions and to monitor local weather reports.

Language

Fiji has 3 official languages, Fijian, Hindi and English. English is widely spoken and understood across the islands.

Fiji has plug sockets with 3 flat pins in a triangular formation, with a 240 supply voltage and 50Hz.

Power cuts can occur during the wet season, due to storm damage. This problem is more frequent on more remote islands where power comes from power generators.
