Country Information

Health

Be sure to get appropriate health insurance that fits your travel and personal needs, and have funds available to cover any medical emergency. There are good health facilities in Santiago and other major cities, but a place like Easter Island have only one hospital with limited facilities. To call for an ambulance, dial 131. You can review some recommended vaccines for travel to Chile here.

Security

Even though the political situation is stable and safe, pickpocketing and mugging can still take place in popular tourist sites. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid carrying large amounts of money in crowded places like downtown Santiago. Always use authorized taxi services.

Documentation

Citizens from certain countries in Latin America need their national identity card, and do not need a passport to enter Chilean territory. These countries include Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Several other countries do not require a Visa and can enter Chile with a valid passport: Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Granada, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

All other nationalities are required to contact the Chilean consulate to obtain a Visa.

It is also important to mention that some nationals must pay an entry fee on arrival: Australia – US$117, Mexico – US$23, Suriname – US$25.

Weather

The weather in Chile varies greatly across a large geographic scale: the desertic north is a stark contrast to the rainforest in the deep south or the glaciers near Antarctica. Therefore, the climate recommendation depends on where you choose to travel. For instance, our destinations include the Atacama Desert, which is sunny and dry but cold at night, making it perfect to visit all year long. However, Patagonia is a different story, with its own microclimates, causing the weather to change constantly. Heavy rainfall, strong cold winds, and clear skies can be experienced all on the same day. We recommend taking this trip around summertime.

Language

Chile’s official language is Spanish.

Electricity

The electricity supply is stable around the country. The current operates on 220V, 50Hz, and electrical sockets have two or three holes and accept round (European) plugs.
